Chips for calculators

Representatives of Busicom (Japan) drew attention to the success of Intel. They decided to commission the development of chips for a popular family of programmable calculators.

Programmable calculators had a number of memory cells for temporary storage of numbers. They were supplied with a processor for executing programs for processing stored numbers. That is, programmable calculators were the first step towards the creation of future computers, but they were not yet real computers.

At that time, microcircuits were created for a specific device, which did not allow them to be used in other developments.In other words, Busicom didn’t risk anything because they only ordered for their calculators. And other competitors had to make or order such microcircuits on their own.

Universal microcircuit: from idea to realization

Initially, Intel was tasked with developing at least 12  chips with a unique architecture and specific functionality. Apparently, the Japanese needed to make at least 12 different models of their programmable calculators.

However, Ted Hoff (Intel engineer) suggested going down a completely different path. His idea was to develop one universal microcircuit, which is controlled by a program from a semiconductor memory. Four modules were to be used in such a chip: a 4004 processor, an I/O controller, RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read only memory).

In fact, Tad suggested making one single chip, not 12 different chips. This single chip could be programmed in any number of different ways. And thus receive on its basis not only 12 devices ordered by the Japanese, but in general any number of different microcircuits for solving an innumerable number of tasks.

In April 1970, the company hired engineer Frederico Faggin. He had to design the 4004 control chip in accordance with Hoff’s ideas. The first working samples were received in January 1971. All stages of development were completed in March. Industrial production started already in June 1971.

So the 4004 processor became, in fact, the first working universal “computer” that could be programmed to solve a wide variety of problems. Technically, this processor was implemented as a single chip. The microcircuit is the only one, and its functionality, its actions now depended on how this microcircuit would be programmed.

Later, much more powerful processors will be created, for example, the very popular Intel 8080 and many others. And the Intel 4004 microprocessor was the very first among subsequent, very successful developments.

Intel 4004 microprocessor rights

Initially, the customer company Busicom had the rights to the new chip. Faggin understood that the new development would be widely used due to its versatility and the desire of developers to micro miniaturized computers.

As a result, he was able to convince the management of Intel to acquire the rights to a new chip. Busicom was in significant financial difficulty at the time and agreed to sell the rights for $60,000. So Intel became the owner of its unique development, ahead of its time and possible competitors.

Key Features and Applications of the Intel 4004

In November 1971, the 4004 processor was announced, which was used in the MCS-4 microcomputer. The four-bit chip consisted of 2300 transistors and operated at a frequency of only 93 kHz (kilohertz).

Modern processors are 64-bit microcircuits with GHz speeds that have already become familiar. But those 4 discharges and about a hundred kilohertz were a huge success for microelectronics. After all, it was the first commercial chip available to everyone.

Such a microcircuit, made on a single semiconductor crystal, 3×4 mm in size, in its functions completely replaced the main computers known at that time. Electronic computers (computers) of that time were located in huge halls and were supplied with industrial cooling and air conditioning systems. And here, instead of all this expensive whopper, there is one tiny microcircuit in a standard package, like many other microcircuits of that time, and the price is only about $200.

Initially, the 4004 processor was developed as the main computing element in calculators. Later, it was widely used in other devices. For example, in medicine for blood tests, for managing a network of traffic lights, and for many other things.

There is also a beautiful legend that Intel 4004 was used in the Pioneer 10 research rocket. Alas, this is just a legend that does not detract from the true significance of the development and release of the first 4004 microprocessor.

Conclusions

No one then could have imagined how important that very first 4004 processor turned out to be. A little later, processors became the main components of numerous devices and systems, including office and household appliances.

Can you imagine sitting down to using your laptop for something important only for the Touchpad to decide not to work anymore? I’ve been here once, and to say that it is the most irritating and frustrating thing I’ve ever encountered with my computer would be an understatement.

What made the whole experience even worse was the fact I didn’t have my wireless mouse with me. I had to leave my home and drive all the way to the store just to get a new mouse. Note that I wasn’t tech-savvy back then, so the tips I am going to share with you today were alien to me at the time.

I hope you never have to go through this (unless you are, and that’s what brought you here), but things sometimes are bound to happen. So, if your computer’s Touchpad decides to jam on you, here are five straightforward tips and tricks you can employ and try fixing the situation.

Fix #1: Confirm That Your Laptop’s Operating System is Responding

If you have been following my guides for a while, then you know that I like to start my guides on a light note and then head on to the more complicated stuff. As such, the first thing you’ll need to do here is check to see whether or not the operating system and your computer are responding as usual.

Sometimes, the issue could be that your computer has frozen, implying that it’s not responding to any of your commands. In this case, the Touchpad won’t be working as well.

So, to check and eliminate this issue as the possible cause, try pressing the Windows Key on your computer and see if the Start Menu comes up. If it doesn’t, the computer is frozen, and you’ll need to turn it off and on again. Press and hold the power button for ten seconds to shut down.

If, however, the start menu comes up, then your computer’s operating system hanging isn’t the issue, and you need to check out some of the other possible solutions below.

Fix #2: Corrupt Operating System Files

A second possible issue causing your Touchpad to malfunction is corrupted operating system files. Generally, such an issue would cause a whole lot of other issues on your computer and not just a malfunctioning touchpad – but there is no denying that a faulting touchpad could be the first sign.

With that in mind, fixing such an issue requires you to either perform an OS repair installation or activate a restore point that’s at a date before the issues on your computer started. Note that these two fixes will need you to have an operating system install disc or access to a restore partition on the laptop’s hard drive.

Fix #3: Check BIOS Set-Up

Ensure that your computer’s Touchpad has not been disabled in the BIOS setup. To confirm, open the BIOS setup, find the hardware device settings option, and check whether the Touchpad is enabled or disabled. If it’s disabled, re-enable it and restart your laptop.

Fix #4: An External Device Could be Causing The Issue

I’ve come across cases where a USB input device automatically disabled a computer’s Touchpad whenever it was connected. So, as a troubleshooting step, in this case, I suggest that you disconnect all external devices, turn off your computer, and turn it on again.

If this trick fixes the issue, I suggest that you reconnect the USB devices once again just to confirm that it was responsible for causing the issue.

Fix #5: Try the Fn key combination

The last, but by no means least, way to fix a faulty touchpad on your computer is just as straightforward as the first one we shared.

Some computers retail with a Function key + Fn key combo that allows users to disable and enable the Touchpad. If our computer retailed with this function, press the keys to turn the Touchpad off and on a couple of times.

Conclusion

If you have tried all the possible solutions above and the Touchpad is still not working as you would like, then chances are it’s defective. At this point, you have two choices. Either contact your laptop’s computer manufacturer for further advice on what to do or take the computer to a reputable repair shop, such as Plextor Americas.

Your computer might need a replacement of the Touchpad or some other hardware within it that’s causing the Touchpad to malfunction. That said, as you wait to fix the issue, you could connect your computer to your external mouse and let it act as a workaround.

What may be the consequences of a dirty laptop keyboard?

Dust and crumbs, dirt, water droplets entering the keyboard can slow down the laptop user. Clogged keys cause at least one of the buttons to stick. As a result, the user will have to constantly check whether the button has worked when typing, which will reduce the comfort of use. In addition, this key must be pressed harder, which damages the structure, if this problem is not resolved in time. 

For avid gamers, a sticky button is also a problem: an incorrectly triggered function that a particular element of the keyboard performs leads to a decrease in speed, and therefore a loss of pleasure from the game.

In addition to a decrease in productivity while a user is working at a laptop with a dirty keyboard, dirt and liquid entering the keys can completely disable them: you will need to contact a service center to change the keyboard. And water entering the laptop through the keys can oxidize the hardware components and damage the laptop. Replacing such components will cost the user more than timely cleaning the keyboard of the laptop in use.

How do I clean my laptop keyboard?

To prevent the keys from sticking, they must be cleaned at least once a month. To make sure everything will work just fine, remove crumbs and dust. To clean the keyboard, you should open the laptop, turn it over and shake it slightly. Some of the dirt will fall out.

Important: when shaking out the dirt from under the keys, hold the laptop by the side parts, holding the mount. This will prevent them from loosening.

What means should be used to clean the laptop keyboard

Use a small brush or an ordinary paintbrush to remove the rest of the blockage. Then wipe the surface of the buttons with a damp laptop cloth. You can replace a special napkin designed for the care of office equipment with a spray for screens: sprinkle a soft cloth or sponge and wipe each key.

Attention! Do not use classic alcohol wipes: a paint that is used to indicate letters and other symbols will rub off. And the oil contained in the composition causes sticking.

Another quick method is to blow through the keyboard using a can filled with compressed air or a back-blowing vacuum cleaner. When performing such manipulations, the user needs to control the strength of the flow so that the buttons do not fly out. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner or a spray can, you can use a regular hair dryer. Keep it about 15 centimeters from the keys.

A good option is a special sticky substance – “slime”. It is attached to the keyboard, sticking to it, and then – removed: crumbs, dust, and other dirt will stick to it.

Remember: when cleaning the keyboard with a hairdryer, you must select the mode of operation with cold air: hot will melt the important details.

Recommendations for the use of cleaning agents

When cleaning the keys from dust with a brush, make sure that the product is of high quality: it should not “fade”. The villi can exacerbate the pollution. To check how good a brush is, run it over your hand, shake it in the air: if the fluff falls out, the product is not suitable.

When wiping the keyboard with a cloth, use the microfiber. This fabric relieves static electricity and is also resistant to microbes. In addition, it is simple to remove dust and grease from it after use: all this is easily washed off with running water.

Removing dirt from under the keyboard

If the user is facing a situation in which dirt has gotten deep under the keys and cannot be removed using methods designed for surface cleaning, it is necessary to remove the button that sinks.

Remember: in laptops, the keys are attached differently, so you have to figure out which side the mounts are on so as not to break the case.

Pry the button and pull it out. Brush off the dust from the dirty areas. Take a cotton swab, sprinkle it with isopropyl alcohol or a spray made specifically for computer care, and wipe hard-to-reach areas. As an option, a small piece of cotton wool is wound around a toothpick and sprayed with a product: it is not necessary to remove the drop-down key.
